Been sick and struggling to get back into work mode? These 7 practical tips will help you ease back into your workflow mindfully after illness.
Being sick is not fun for anyone but I swear it holds even more weight when you’re a solopreneur who runs your own business. After being bedridden for nearly an entire week after a nasty stomach bug, here’s how I’m planning to reset for work and being productive again.
Instead of diving straight into your to-do list, create a “reentry ritual”. Whip out your trusty journal, brain storm and jot down the 20% of things you could do that would make 80% of the difference, review your calendar, and tidy your workspace. Giving yourself some time and a clean space to mentally transition from recovery mode to focus mode.
The endless tasks you need to catch up on can feel overwhelming as they swirl around in your brain. Set yourself up for success by getting it all down on paper while you’re still in recovery mode. List everything on your mind—tasks, worries, reminders—then step back and evaluate the urgency of each task.
You’re not operating at 100% yet and that’s totally fine. Nobody expects you to jump right back into your usual pace. Instead of trying to do everything at once (which is never effective anyways), choose just 1-3 high-impact tasks to focus for the first couple days back. Think progress, not perfection.
Getting sick always acts as a a bit of a perspective shift for me. Check in with your current goals or project priorities. Do they still align? Are there lighter ways to move towards goal completion? This is the perfect time to reflect on what you’ve been working on and whether they’re really the most high-impact tasks.
Work in short, focused blocks with built-in rest (think 45 minutes on, 15 minutes off). Pay attention to your energy and how you feel—not just the clock. Give yourself permission to stop when you’re tired. Don’t over-do it!
Don’t expect to nail your full morning routine, inbox zero, and meal prep on day one. Layer your habits back gradually. Try to focus on one small in at a time while listening to what your body needs to get back to normal.
Rather than jumping straight into admin or meetings, try tasks that are engaging but low-pressure—like outlining a blog post, reviewing ideas, or curating inspiration. Get your brain back into flow state (gently).
Returning to work after being sick is all about finding that sweet spot between making progress while still taking care of yourself. Don't let guilt or pressure push yourself to overdo it. Listen to your body and I promise you'll get back to your regular self faster than trying to force it.
